#270. Hummous Too!

Posted April 25, 2005, 14:05 CEST

Having settled into a comfortable routine of grocery shopping — veggies in that place on Wexford Street, rice and spices and sauces in the Rathmines Oriental Emporium and everything else in Dunnes — my world was shaken by a leisurely walk through Ranelagh which led to the discovery of that pinacle of urban living in contemporary Ireland: the farmers' market.

Sundays henceforth, I shall be buying large quantities of jams, olives, breads, and etceteras fresh from the farmer's arse.

Also discovered on this faithful day was a magical off-license with over 5 fridge-metres of chilled 'world' beers, as well as another, closer LASER DVD place. Meaning even less need for a TV.

ah Laser is great so are farmers markets though they make love to everything they sell, especially the jam/.

Yeah, well, there's a Spar down the road from me. And another Spar in DCU. And also a Spar across the road from DCU. So there.

You could do worse than poke your head into the organic food stall place in Georges Arcade...

mmm Polenta.

I haven't tried anything from the George's Arcade stall, but it sure looks tasty.

There's also Meeting House Square on a Saturday, of course, but the joy is having lots of yummy organic stuff nay 10 minutes away.

Oh the joy.

You're just jealous of my access to many high-cost low-quality faceless chain stores. All I need now is half a dozen Centras within 60 seconds walking of my house.

You once confessed to going to spacebucks, did you not?

I can't remember who has the photographic evidence, but it's out there somewhere. Also they make nice chocolate. And its still better than going elsewhere and getting something that's probably supplied by Nestle or Maxwell House - maybe if I lived in town I'd have a choice of coffee places but not in Finglas or DCU. They control less than 1% of the coffee market and they pay fair trade prices to local suppliers, avoiding commodities markets. Around here there are no other coffee places so they can't exactly push out the traditional local cafes.

Defending Evil Chain Number 2!

If Naomi Klein was here, she'd bite your legs off.
Comment from badcolm on April 25, 2005, 18:55 CEST
She'd never get near me, there'd be hundreds of crusties hounding her for autographs. But anyway, IMO in terms of evil corporations Starbucks is the least of anybody's worries. They're an anchovy in a sea of really big swimmy things.

i don't agree, but this is a debate for over a pint not over http.

we'll save it till the flatwarming.

You're only discovering Redmonds now? Man I though everyone new about that place. Best off license in Dublin. Makes up for Belgo not being here anymore.

I'm not used to your fancy south-side customs and traditions.

In the norf all we have is a giant vat of poitín and half a million straws.
