#188. wifi delight

Posted October 19, 2003, 15:15 CEST

I am writing this while sitting in my bed in the the Generator hostel in London.

By this statement you will gather that a) I have left San Francisco and b) I have acquired myself some kind of portable writing machine.

The arduous ten hour flight dropped us in Heathrow yesterday. I think we've coped with the jetlag thing quite well, using a combination of caffeine, power naps and museum shuffling. It's now 12 midnight and I'm just about ready for sleepies. Tomorrow we'll get up early, beat the rush on breakfast and do some more siteseeing. Highlights from today were David Blaine in his box, seeing the new "egg" building, watching the hawk scare the pigeons in Trafalgar Square, molesting the various wildfowl in St. James Park and after all that, chilling out to the sunset exhibit in the Tate Modern.

I also spent a good couple of hours looking for a wi-fi coffee shop so I could play with my new toy. I was even ready to swallow my mild-anti-globalisation morals and go into a Starbucks, but half them didn't have wi-fi and the other half had closed too early. I'll might drop by one tomorrow and get me a dose of the interweb.

The new toy in question is a shiny new powerbook, which was my desktop machine during summer but is now the generous gift of my boss. It's one nice piece of kit - large 17" screen, bluetooth, 802.11g, usb, firewire, dvd burner, etc - and very useful both for travelling and for using when I get home. Worryingly though, is that the hard disk is making very strange noises at the moment. I hope it didn't get knocked around too much during the flight.

It is so shiny, in fact, that I'd better put it away now before these Australians get back from the bar and take a fancy to it.

How is the toasted ham-and-cheese sandwich vending machine?

Every Starbucks I found in London has WiFi (also called T Mobile hotspots, same thing). Do me a favour, swipe me the uber-comfortable purple couch in Starbucks Marble Arch please... :)

As an adopted citizen of Oz-tastic I find that last statement offensive! In a gross sense.

"Gherkin" not "egg".

Adam... yeah, heard about this guy years ago. I've tried to have him killed, but with no luck, alas.
