I'm leaving here in two weeks. Before I go, I want to take advantage of the low cost of electronics over here. And what better investment than an MP3 player to replace my aging minidisk and mp3cd players.
I could, perhaps, purchase an iPod. Fantastic as they are, I don't really think I want to have to carry something so expensive around everywhere. I don't think I could go out and enjoy a pint if I had to keep one eye on me jacket all night. Plus, hard disk based players are invariably going to be bulkier, heavier and eat batteries faster than flash based players.
So, if we're going for a flash based player, the criteria are: at least 128MB of internal memory; an memory expansion slot (ideally CompactFlash so I can use my camera's 256MB card); USB (obviously); data (i.e. non-MP3) file storage availability and plug-'n'-play-ness (i.e. appears as mass storage device - meaning maximum OS compatibility and portability). Other features such as size, battery use, sound quality are also important.
After a bit of research, reading reviews, and hum-hawing, I think I've settled on the RCA Lyra RD1071, which, as well as meeting the criteria above, has received positive reviews.
Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.
On another note, this is interesting, even if I did think of doing something similar about two years ago.
I had dismissed it because I thought it needed its own drivers and software, but on further inspection it seems that you can upgrade the firmware to make it a UMS device http://www.iriveramerica.com/support/ums.asp?195).
