#127. No Monthly Bottom Cakes

Posted July 7, 2002, 21:31 CEST

Glad to see the new mackers.com server change has improved the service. At the time of writing, it seems we're as down and dead as a dick doctor. Not fully down, it's just teasing. I can still ping it, just can't connect. Who knows what it's doing? Maybe plotting its next random file deletion. I lost one or two posts, a couple of years worth of misc. files, any updates to the website in the last month, and suffered about 4 days of email black holeness.

I suppose it's to be expected of the crowd of cowboys that provide my hosting. A company which has branded itself after its one sales pitch - no monthly fees. This in itself is verging on misnomer status, considering that they actually charge per year. Presumably they thought they were clever enough that no-one would realise that a yearly fee is just 12 monthly fees altogether. The reason I signed up in the first place was because I actually believed their claim of lifetime hosting for a once-off fee. Of course, subsequent to this, they reneged on this and starting charging yearly. My enquiries to this reversal of their policy met with replies of "what? who!" and other similar denials that such an offer ever existed. I could, of course, change host. The golden handcuffs are hardly strong enough for me not to change to say, netsoc, who are considering offering external web hosting for members next year.

To summarize, my advise is simply not to trust the claims of anyone as far as you can spit on them (a philosophy habitually endorsed by the Ste himself). Specifically, I'd advise to we weary of nomonthlyfees.com, yesmonthlyfees.com, mympc.com (<- click!!), or any of their false names or aliases. To be fair though, it's back up now (within an hour of my reporting it).

Anyway, that's enough ranting for the moment. I'll be off to ponder Tuesday's tattoo appointment.
